About CIMC-ICDM
The International Commission on Disaster Medicine (CIMC-ICDM) has been created by numerous bodies for the Promotion of the Principles of and Common Interest in Disaster Medicine, calling upon common humanity to relieve and reduce the toll of death, disease, illness, and injury resulting from disasters of natural, industrial, and intentional cause.
Considering that disasters can be sudden or gradual in onset, novel or ancient in existence, and local or global in presence; but constant in creating humanitarian vulnerabilities and crises through the disruption of the community or society; and that these result in human, material, economic, or environmental losses that exceed the ability to cope using existing resources, the CIMC-ICDM intends to offer a global and centralized platform for experience, expertise, and experiment to all Disaster Medicine stakeholders.
Acknowledging the universal need for evidence based knowledge and training for stakeholders (doctors, carers, rescuers, logisticians, administrative staff, interpreters, …) applicable to a multi-disciplinary Disaster Medicine response, the CIMC-ICDM goal is to offer a comprehensive body of services directly or through partnership with international bodies, think tanks, NGOs, learned societies, universities, colleges or schools, as well as private companies or initiatives, professional practice, insurers, governments that express an unwavering commitment to the safety and security of Disaster Medicine responders and the populations they serve.
Thus, the CIMC-ICDM commits itself to:
- Steer a collaborative initiative to develop and propagate such evidence based knowledge and training as to enhance global Disaster Medicine capabilities.
- Promote the exchange of information necessary to develop the common core of discrete knowledge that defines inter- and multi-disciplinary Disaster Medicine.
- Commit to the creation of standards and best practices, the certification of approved training and testing centers, and establishment of a globally recognized credential of core competency in Disaster Medicine.
- Advance a common framework and lexicon related to Disaster Medicine that can be translated into multiple languages and applicable to myriad cultures.
Those commitments will increase the collaborative capacity of both organisations and individuals to cooperate, better knowing that no matter how national team are taught, certified, and trained, they will have to work with counterparts from other nations as well as local rescue teams, and thus need to share a common operational construct.
The symbol of the CIMC-ICDM consists of two images. The Rod (or Staff) of Asclepius is the ancient symbol of medicine and healing. This is superimposed on a sprig of oak leaves, which represents strength and resilience, and acorns, signifying growth and renewal. This combination is at the centre of a circle, which represents the earth and the universal focus of the entity. The organizational name is inscribed within the encompassing circle, depicting the global mission of the CIMC-ICDM.
